Post-Holiday Reflections

Have you ever noticed the more you hang around people the more you begin to speak like them? Or even begin to desire the same things as they do? With the holidays just passing I’ve noticed my desires shifting and not in the most godly way. The influence of others is so prevalent and the more time you spend with a person the more likely you’ll start to become like them. Think about it. Think back to a time where you were desiring more of what the world offers…who were you spend a lot of time with? Then, think back to a time where you were on point with God…who were you hanging out with a lot? I know for me that this is so true in my life.

With celebrating the holidays these past few weeks where I’ve been spending more time with people I normally don’t hang out with much it has really opened my eyes to Proverbs 13:20. What and who we place ourselves around has a greater impact on us than we may initially recognize. After many gatherings and events where I was placing myself around people I wouldn’t call a godly influence I began desiring worldly things more than things of Christ. The worldly desires such as money, partying, and sexual immorality became more important for me to fulfill than my godly characteristics. The more time I spent with the “unwise” the more my desires grew for such things.
[Disclaimer: I’m not saying that by hanging out with certain people caused me to sway away from my walk with God but my time spent with them definitely was an ingredient that helped influence my attitude. I dropped my guard (reading the Bible every day) and made a choice to accept the influential offers.]

Although, this could have ended disastrously God was near even when I was not near to Him and pursuing Him. He knew exactly what I needed to hear. As I swung back into my daily routine because we all know that holidays seem to kick us off on an ultra-lazy or supersonic-busy mode, I was able to recognize the truth and why I was feeling down and out. I made the decision to sit and listen for God. As I did this He revealed Proverbs 13:20 to me. Just that little time with God shows me how powerful His influence is on my life and how much more powerful it can be when I place His Word over me as protection during these busy times with “unwise” people.
So, will you spend more time with people who will drag you down or will you choose to spend more time with people who can build you up, creating in you wise desires?

It’s a choice. You have to make it.

Dazed, Confused, and Distracted.

"Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect". ~ Romans 12:2 (NLT)

//We ask "Why" so often. Why can't I do this? Why did this happen? Why won't God answer me? One thing I've noticed, though, is that we rarely question ourselves. What am I doing that is hindering my progress? What am I not doing that is disconnecting me with God? What kind of tactics am I allowing the devil to use in hindering my relationship with God? These are the vital questions we should be asking.

There are so many things that serve as distractions, but what do your distractions appear to be? What is it that you may do, listen to, watch or read that is creating a distraction from God and living for His glory?

About 3 months ago I was struggling to hear from God on an important decision that I was running out of time to make. Basically, I didn't know what God's Will was for me at the moment and I was confused as to why I wasn't hearing Him speak to me. It was pointed out to me that this struggle could all be caused by my own doing. Although, not until this morning did I realize that it was true. I was, for a lack of better words, the victim of my own crimes. I don't watch television too often, but when I do it's only certain series. One series in particular struck me as having a great impact on my relationship with God. It was by no means the most appropriate show. I justified watching it by telling myself I knew what was right from wrong. Let me fill you in on something. Trying to justify your actions such as I did is not really living for Christ. Rather it is living 50/50 for Christ and yourself. Romans 12:2 makes it crystal clear. We are not to conform to the behaviors of this world we live in. But we do it anyway! Of course I wasn't going to have clear direction from God because I was creating barriers that cut Him out of areas of my life. He needs all of us, every part of us in order to clearly express His Will.
...

My distraction is definitely the television series I choose to watch. It may be frivolous to think that television would have such an impact on your relationship with God but we need to start realizing that our distractions truly do.

Think about what distracts you from pursuing the Lord. Maybe it is television. Or it could be certain aspects of social gatherings that you get caught up in. Even books can have an impact on your relationship with God. So, what is it? What are the things that distract you and what will you do about it? Continue to justify them, compromising your relationship with the Lord? That sounds like you're sitting on the fence. We need to ask whether our distractions are more important that pursuing God and His glory.

To really know God's good, acceptable, and perfect Will we need to not be conformed to this world and all of it's flashing lights, only giving God certain areas of our lives. Once we figure this out we begin to transform, being able to know His Will for our lives.

I encourage you to write down your distractions and make an action plan of how you will make it a habit to not partake in them. Counteract your distractions with a positive form such as instead of listening to inappropriate music listen to music that praises God.
//

Transformations take time and practice. So, don't give up after the first try. God is waiting patiently, with His arms open wide. He is cheering for you to overcome these obstacles and for you to know His plans for your life.

Expectations & Grace.

Our expectations should be in the perfection of Christ, which won’t be attained until we reach eternity. Having expectations for perfection in earthly, human, sinful beings will only set yourself up to tear others down. When we expect others to be perfect and they don't attain that goal then we become increasingly aware of their failures. I know for myself I’ve expected others to grasp and apply Godly counsel to their own lives the moment after they learn it whether through prayer, worship or a message.
\\

I create this almost unattainable goal for someone. This goal isn’t even something I’d create for myself because I know that I may mess up and most likely take time and practice to apply it on a daily basis. But I don’t give others this kind of grace. I set the bar high, I expect them to follow- through and attain it and when they don't attain it I’m disappointed; I create animosity toward that person and react on that. I’m pretty sure this is the exact opposite of how God expects us to act.

Even if the person understands the lesson, proclaims they’ll apply it but continuously never does we are still called to give grace and mercy to them. We are not called to be judges. We are not called to be holier than thou. We are called to be examples, just as Christ was. We are called to possess the characteristics of Jesus but when we raise the bar to the highest point for others and lower it for ourselves we are nowhere near being Christ-like.
...

We’ve got to realize this is evil, that this is sinful. Changing someone is God’s authority, not ours. We can only be vessels that express a Christ-like life!
[This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have hope for others. Our hope needs to be grounded in God, though, not in human abilities.]

The more your life consistently expresses Christ, the more people will notice how God has directed your life. Why would I expect others to be perfect when I know that I could never be? I know that this is something that may take a while to become habitual. It still doesn't always come easy to me to give grace to others. Grace does go a long way but first we need to learn how to accept the grace given to us from God. If we don't know how to accept this gift and live a life on the foundation of this gift we will certainly not be able to give it freely without conditions to others around us. God is waiting to humble you and teach you His way of giving grace. Take to the Scriptures and talking with the Lord for direction about grace. He will answer. He will show you. Just ask.
//

Romans 14:1-4
As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

Give Grace. Grace Has Been Given To You.

Moment by Moment...

//Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. ~Ephesians 5:15-17//

I often don’t think about the detrimental aspects of time. Yes, time, as in the hours in each day kind of time. I recently prayed asking God to help me use my time more wisely knowing that there has to be more than just spending it watching reruns of my favorite television series or perusing Instagram. The past few weeks I’ve felt busier than normal and been wondering where all of my time had been spent, wishing I had more of it.

As I prayed, God brought to mind how much time He actually has given me. He showed me that much of my time has been spent in the future. You ask “How can that be possible?” but as I began to search my thoughts it was true. God revealed that my mind is solely focused on thinking about, planning and executing ideas or To-Do lists for things that are in the future such as college choices, college applications and all that encompasses them, furthering my career, worrying about my bills that have yet to arrive, and constantly pondering whether I’ll end my legacy with becoming a crazy cat lady.

//"Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain. An occasional glance toward the summit keeps the goal in mind, but many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new advantage point."

Not to say that all of these thoughts are never good to contemplate but to obsess over them almost every day is, in a way, sinful. Pause a moment and think about it. If all of your time in the present is being redirected to thinking about the future or even the past then you leave behind moments that God has planned for you now; Moments of joy, moments of lessons, moments of glorifying Him. You’re leaving behind times of rest, rebuilding or discovery. You become a thief of your own time.
I’ve been learning that I’m in a time of rest and building and that I need ‘time-checks’, where I stop what I’m doing or thinking to evaluate how I’ve been using my time. Future- focused and keeping busy with To-Do lists are certainly tasks that I get caught up in almost every day and it seems that I take part in these so that I can try to avoid dealing with something in the present that’s either painful or well, boring. Can you just imagine all the wonderful things that God has shown you each day but you were too busy looking back or gazing too far forward to even catch a glimpse? We miss out on too much when our minds and hearts are not focused on the right here, right now.

In the past few months, God has never left my side and has been with me through all situations helping me discover more about myself, about Him and His plans. When I actually follow through with keeping my mind and heart focused on the moments at hand instead of in the future He has revealed to me how big and powerful He really is. Throughout this leg of the journey I have experienced pure joy, true happiness, growth, pain, healing, set-backs, rebuilding, love, perfect peace and much needed rest.

[[Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. ~Matthew 6:34]]
God tells us not to worry about tomorrow for today has enough troubles for itself. He’s right, you know. Becoming future-focused (as we all often do in today’s society) or stuck in the past is not where God is. God is here, now. God is working in your life right now and if you don’t change your view you might miss out on spectacular opportunities of growth. So, I encourage you to take time-checks and evaluate how wisely you’re spending your time. God has great things in store for you now, in the present but when you focus on the future or past you turn away from all of His great gifts and loving lessons.

Be present. Meditate on His Word. Look for Him in the now.

Preparing for Battle.

Ephesians 6:14-20
//Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— 19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.\\

-Commit your emotions to believe the Truth
-Keep your heart pure and Righteous because sin gives a foothold to the enemy
-Spread the Gospel of Peace and Reconciliation
-Above all, rely on your Faith to deflect all the enemy's tricks
-Assurance of Salvation is a mighty defense against doubt and insecurity & their works
-The Word of God is sharper than a two-edged sword
-Keep in constant communication with the Lord God, our Leader, through Prayer
...

God gave  us clear guidelines of how to prepare ourselves to fight against the enemy. And when we choose to do these things day after day without relenting we grow stronger in Christ. We are more prepared to fight the battle. Professional boxers don't just enter into the ring and begin throwing punches. If they did (pridefulness), then they would surely lose. Rather, the boxer learns, practices and meditates on how they will take down their opponent. We must look at our battles the same way but instead of fighting for a title (which we already possess; Children of God) we are fighting for our lives & the lives of others.
//

So, what should we do?
Throw hopeful punches? or confident daggers?

Let's prepare ourselves for the battles the enemy throws at us each day. God has given each of us the material to do so and confidence in Him (remember from last week's post that God never leaves us).

Learn. Strengthen. Fight.

Who are You?

John 10:28 "And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand".

God recently spoke to me about who you and I are to Him.
...

Listen to what He had to say:
I am always there, right beside you. No one can take you away unless you allow it. I have given you the choise to either look to Me or elsewhere. When you don't look to Me at all time in all situations, when you become distracted your focus is lost and you begin to lose sight of what matters. Whatever you're distracted by right now, whether it be the television, your phone, Facebook, the children, the car that just pulled out in front of you...these things are distracting you and pulling you away from Me. Remember that I am always right beside you. You must make a decision of whether you will allow the distractions to consume your thoughts or not.
//

Don't lose sight of me. Guard your heart and mind. Everyday is a battle and you must be prepared to fight it. For everyday the devil is longing for those who are not ready and pounces at the chance to distract your focus from Me. Don't let him! Take heed to what I tell you and prepare yourself each day. Draw close to Me by reading My Word, think of what I would do (yes, the WWJD phrase comes into play), talk with me. I am right next to you ready to help. Those times of frustration, sadness, anxiety, nervousness, anger are all antics from the devil to distract you.

\\
I never leave you nor forsake you. So, abide in Me and you will never leave Me also.
...
You are MY child.

Samantha

When All You See is Unmet Desires...

//Colossians 3:23

Being content. I don't think there has ever been a time before this that God has really screamed (not literally) for me to be still, know that He is God, and to be content with where I am and with what I have at this very moment. It's a lot easier said than actually done.

I don't know about you but if you're like me and almost any other human on this earth then you have plans for your life, desires to fulfill, and places to explore. When those plans don't work out, those desires go unfulfilled, and all of the places are without adventures we become very unsettled. Our hearts begin to doubt and even grow hardened when what we anticipate is no longer.
This leads us to question God. Why is this happening to me, Jesus? What is my purpose? Do I have a purpose? Where did I go wrong? What's coming next? Why can't I have answers to my life? As I prayed each and everyone of these questions it struck me that my life is not actually my own. God made me, predestined me for great works, and knows exactly where He is leading me. I know nothing. I can't foretell the future. I can't see what's behind the next door. Only God has that power.
\\

And He wasn't done teaching me after that epiphany. You know what came next...another question. So, how do I be content, Lord? God wants us to be content so that He has us in a position that allows Him to speak to us without distractions, unless of course we create distractions (that's a whole other topic to discuss, though). He wants all of us, this very moment, to draw near to Him at all times, especially during those hopeless moments. Remember that God knows exactly how you feel. He felt it all while He manifested Himself on earth through His One and Only Son, Jesus. So, He gets it.

Being content is a process. It doesn't happen overnight or even over the next week. I don't believe that there is some 12-step program that will get us to be content or some prayer we pray that will make us content. What I do believe is that to be content we, first, need patience. I mean, isn't that part of what being content is all about? Patience will slow our minds, our actions, and allow us to be still in order for us to actually be aware of God in our moments. Which leads me to think that our perspective on our situation is also important.
How we view the moments we are in, these doubtful and hopeless moments, is key to our contentment. If we view them as we have (doubtful and hopeless) we will drudge our way through day after day finding no light at the end of the tunnel. Instead we must look at these instances as being allowed by God, even if He didn't cause them. 1 Peter 5:7 illustrates for us that God cares for us so much so that He commanded us to cast our burdens onto Him. No matter what we see, we must choose to accept the situation as if it were coming from God knowing that He cares for our well-being and that He is sovereign through whatever may come.
//

Although, being content will not happen without total submission. These situations are usually not fun or sweet. So, don't express that to God. Rather, be truthful and sincere expressing how you really feel to God. "This is painful, Lord, and I'm not sure why I must go through this but I choose to submit to You because You are trustworthy, faithful, and loving. I'm accepting this situation and I will persevere until whatever it is You want to accomplish in me is fulfilled." If we let go and submit like this to God, we are allowing ourselves to be open to His plan, His voice, and His timing. This is exactly what we want! We can take heart in the fact that whatever He has planned for whenever He chooses to unfold it we have hope in knowing that it will be something good and something that will bring Him glory.

Your waiting period is hopeful because something great will be coming soon. So, be content in this moment and seek what God wants to teach you and what it is that He wants to prepare in you.

Be encouraged. Be righteously submissive. And seek Him moment after moment.

Success or Failure.

So, I’m what you call a cliché; At least according to the standards of society. Something that’s hard for me to even think about. I’ll share with you that yes, I’m a college graduate, the typical type that did not get into graduate school the first time around like she assumed, has no job prospects, lives with her parents still, can’t afford to buy a decent car because she has no money to actually pay off her student loans, and is struggling to find meaning in the limbo.

//
Wow, did I just openly admit all of that? I don’t know about you but that stings a little, especially when I’m exposing that to the whole wide world. If you see me and my situation through the world’s eyes I’m just a complete failure or an unsuccessful, hopeless cause. This mindset is recurring each and every day when I see other people out driving or walking or in the complex I live that seem to “look” successful driving their brand new sporty cars, dressed to the tee, or whatever it may be. Are they really successful? Maybe, when measured according to the world’s ways. But, if we measure ourselves according to God’s word, His plan for our lives, His mercy and love then we would find ourselves most successful. What the world describes us as is depressing. It devalues who we really are, what we have to offer, and what we’re really made of.  It also devalues who God is and what He can do. God’s success meter is infinite. We cannot understand His measures.

//
Waiting to be successful dependent upon what society expects is going to be a long and rough wait time. Waiting when all you want to do is sprint to your next destination will be something that you will need to be intentional about. I won’t candy coat it. The waiting time will be tough. It will push you to a breaking point. Instead of looking at your situation, the lack of success, the lack of a job or independence as something negative and hindering you try looking at your troubles as a growth period; a period where God has you and is trying to teach you something. Will this waiting time be wasted on wallowing or will it be a chance for you to glorify God and show others that even through the dark valleys you have a joy that is more powerful than anything in this world? Deepen your relationship with God tonight and this week. Each time you find yourself depressed, wishing you had more, or were more successful take a moment to talk to God about it. Pray to Him and tell Him how you’re feeling and to help you see your situation through His eyes. He will give you strength, a new mindset, and joy for the moment if you ask. He is with you and is for you.

I know how you’re feeling. I’m right there with you. I’ll be praying for you.
Patience.  Faith.  Growth.

We're Already Equipped.

Ever felt that you thought you were called to do something but when you started to think it over, your mind realized that you were ill-equipped for the calling? Don’t worry. This seems to be a common experience among believers. But do know that you have been equipped from the day you believed in God.
//Romans 8:9-11
The Holy Spirit indwells our beings. He is God within us. Yes, I said “He”. There is some misconception that the Holy Spirit is an “it” or some kind of force. I don’t know about you, but a force doesn’t usually have feelings, know things, and reveals things to people. So, in the Word of God the Holy Spirit is portrayed as expressing love (Romans 15:30) and is one who determines spiritual gifts in believers (1 Corinthians 12:7-11). These are just a few characteristics of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is God himself. Jesus explained in John 14: 16 and 26 that a Helper was coming after Him to aid, teach, and assure us as the body of Christ. When it comes to feeling equipped we think that someone else is usually a better candidate for the job than we are. We may believe that the time isn’t right since we have read through the entire Bible just yet, or that we haven’t really earned our spot for the calling.
//
Let me tell you that this is the mindset that the devil wants you to have. The devil is so clever when it comes to words and he wants you to believe in those lies he tells you about not being equipped for the job. Just as the Bible indicates, you ARE equipped for the job the moment you put your trust and belief in Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us that we will become a new creature when we accept Christ as our Savior and with that, comes the Holy Spirit dwelling in us (John 3: 3-8). The Spirit intercedes for us, reveals spiritual gifts to us, teaches us, and guides us. The Spirit is not going to guide us into thinking we are not equipped for God’s plan or for what God has called us to do. As He dwells within us, we are equipped to do the Will of God already. That is His job; to equip us, the believer, so we can model Jesus to the world whether it be by our actions, thoughts, or deeds. We are equipped because of our belief in Christ who has given us the Spirit, our Helper, to do His will in all aspects of life.
//
So, when you begin to think that you are not equipped to do what God has called you to, say what God has called you to say, or act in the way that God has called you to act then you are believing the devil’s lies and giving him power to control your life. You are giving him power to consider you less than what you are in Christ. You are giving him power to not bring God glory. Let’s give God the power to rule our hearts and allow the Spirit to fill us up so that we are can extinguish what the devil speaks. I encourage you to read over who the Holy Spirit is, what he entails, and what he offers us as believers. Dig deeper and grow your knowledge of God and all He has to offer us. You ARE equipped. God says so. Believe it!

Believe it. Dig into it. Apply it.

When You Don’t Have a Heart Filled With Joy.

There are times when my heart is overflowing with abundant joy that it is plain as day to detect, but there are also moments of my life that my heart is not overflowing with joy and seems to be stagnant. This is inevitable. Every one of us will experience stages in our lives that are less pleasurable than we long for. No one necessarily wants to be sad, going through the motions, or in a deadlock. We want to experience joy, happiness, a purpose, and ultimately a fulfilling relationship with the Lord. No one truly finds great pleasure in stagnant segments of life.
I don’t know about you, but during these moments I feel, well, dull; like I am unable to pull myself up from it and I don’t have the slightest idea of how to get back to where I was with God before this grueling encounter. I feel like I have no purpose and true joy from the Lord seems to have gone out the window and maybe your experience looks a little different.

Let me fill you in on a little secret. It’s not God, it’s you. Oh, did I just openly say that? It seems a little harsh, but it’s the truth. My intention is not to offend or hurt you by any means. My intention is to bring truth to you and additionally, to myself.
It’s not us as a person. It’s not our character. It’s our perspective, our vision, or frame of view. We see these stagnant instances as negative, daunting, and at times hopeless. But what God wants us to comprehend is that we are off-track. He is giving us a clear indication that we have lost our perspective about our lives and purpose. He is giving us a chance to grow our faith in Him and to surrender to his refinement of our character.
//

So, now that we know the truth about these quiet moments, what’s next?
Over the past few years I have come up with some starting points for stagnant moments:
1)      Pray. Talk to God about how you are feeling, what is going on in your head, or just call out His name. As 1 Peter 5:7 commands, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you” (NIV). He isn’t far away. He is close, nearby to listen to you and comfort you. And might I remind you that God is always near even when you do not feel that He is. Job 34:21 “For His eyes are upon the ways of a man, And He sees all his steps” (NAS).
2)      Seek. In times of drought and stagnation we must remember that we have the truth at hand, the Bible. We should seek His Word and teachings by digging into the Bible day after day. Sometimes I find myself digging in the Word but not “feeling” much of anything. Don’t be upset with yourself for this feeling. Just continue to read His Word and pursue Him. We have gotten off-track but by keeping in His Word, seeking Him in all we do, say, and think eventually, we will begin to feel God’s presence both physically and spiritually.
3)      Be still. Quiet yourself before God. This takes some time getting used to. Our lives are so busy and that is often why our perspective of life and purpose derails. We don’t take time to just “be”. Take 5 minutes each day to “be still”. When your mind wanders (and it will!) draw your attention back on to a characteristic of God or imagine walking alongside a lake with the Lord at your side. It seems a little awkward right now, but this is something that helps me to regain focus and actually feel God is right here with me. 5 minutes, that’s all. Just try it!
4)      Do something. It’s been said that people who are clinically depressed are often prescribed a dose of “giving”. Although, you may not be clinically depressed or maybe you are, redirecting your focus onto something or someone else will help you stop thinking so much and start seeing the true blessings God has given you. When we help someone in need, whether it be serving at your local soup kitchen, holding the door for someone, writing an encouraging or thank you note to someone, or visiting with cute elderly people at the nursing home, we begin to have a purpose. So, by helping others we transmit self-focus to others-focused creating in ourselves a purpose, brightening up someone’s day, and we have opportunities to bring God glory. How awesome! A 3-in-1 deal! The challenge here is to write out a few “Do Something” opportunities and set a date of when to accomplish each “Do Something” activity. Trust me, you can do it and I promise that it might be frightening at first but in the end you will feel joy.
5)      Lastly, praise God! Finding something to praise God for in the midst of a drought may be tough. We often think of the negative things and why we are still stuck in this stagnant place. So, I challenge you (and myself) during the course of each day find at least three things to praise God for. It could be something like the sun shining, for protecting you from a car accident, or something as simple as the pure heavenly cup of coffee! Praise Him in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Praise Him for He is faithful and keeps His promises.
//
God is waiting to see what we do during this time. He wants to see how our faith has grown since the last stagnation and how much we trust in Him. God is with us during these moments. He really is (even if you don’t feel as if that’s true). Sometimes I have to convince myself that God is with me at all times, cheering me on to fight the good fight, to keep running the race at hand. It’s tough. It’s draining. And if we are all honest, there are phases when we just want to quit. But don’t. Remind yourself of what James 1:2-4 affirms, "My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing" (NKJV).

You will get through this. You will regain your purpose. You will feel God’s presence again.
He is with you, Always.

Samantha

A Valley.

You know those dark feelings? The feeling of emptiness, no direction or purpose? Those feelings of doubt, fear, and distance? Lately, I've known each one of those all too well. As an "about to be" recent college graduate I thought everything was supposed to be different than it is right now. Like everyone else, I'm supposed to go to graduate school right out of undergrad and further my career. You can guess what I'm about to say next...This is not what's happening. I did not get into a program this year (I'm still on a waiting list with hundreds of other people).
I surely thought this was a complete mistake. I must have done something wrong for this to happen to me. I mean, I was a fairly eligible candidate given my top performance and credentials. Even though, I'm still recovering from the valley of emotions I have a new perspective.

God doesn't see our situations the same way that we do. Isaiah 55:8-9 says, "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.". When I see a valley of failure, He sees a valley of growth.
Many times we perceive things happening TO us. But God sees it as happening FOR us. Philippians 1:12 "...the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel..."
Anything we go through, Jesus already understands. He knows the pain, frustration and utter failure we experience. Hebrews 4:15 "For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin."
Even as a longtime follower of Christ, I will forget that my life is not suppose to be in congruence with everyone else's. God has a plan just as Jeremiah 29:11 says. He has a plan specifically designed for each one of His children and often times that plan doesn't follow the grain of wood.
The typical path...high school, college, graduate school, career, family, and retirement may not necessarily be the plan He has crafted for me right now or at least not necessarily in the order. Obviously, God sees something different than my small window view reveals. Because, yes, right now I see failure and embarrassment. But, He sees growth and exciting adventures ahead.

So, let me leave you with this. Your path right now is not a mistake. Those dark emotions eating at you will subside. God does not leave His works unfinished. Philippians 1:6 "...being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.". Don't give up. Don't let go. It's tough, I know. But the Creator has you in His hands. Go to Him. Don't let the world determine your path. He is there for you. He has a plan. So, fight for your life day after day because eventually something will "click" and you'll understand the reason why you were in the valley. Then, God will be overjoyed for your faith in Him; your fight for something more. I can see it now, His smiling face. Keep going. You've got this.

Psalm 23:4 "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me..."

Psalm 27:14 "Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!".

Anxious Heart.

Anxiety. We all have succumbed to its pressure at least once or twice in our lives. For me, one of those times is currently happening. There is a presentation I have to give and be judged on for research I have been conducting over the past year. To say the least, I. Am. Terrified. I have been putting thinking about this presentation off for the past year (I knew I would have to do it sooner or later) and it was all fine until today, the night before. God knows what my anxiety looks like. He knows how big it is right now. But the thing is, I need to remind myself of how big He is and what His power looks like because ultimately I just may be horrible at giving presentations. It may not be a gift of mine, but God has power to enhance those gifts. He truly has the power to do anything! You and I have a part in this also. It tells us in the Bible that we must not be anxious about ANYTHING, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, we are to present our requests to God. As a result, He will give us His peace that surpasses all understanding as well as guarding our hearts and minds. (Phil. 4:6-7) This verse is widely known by a lot of people. So, why then do we continue this tragic road filled with worry and fear? It baffles me as to why when worry begins I just don't stop it at that moment and pray, make my request known to God, give thanks to Him and BELIEVE He will take care of it. I do this often, which if you would be honest with yourself you probably do too. We have a part in this, though. Praying. Asking. Believing. God is for us. He has a plan and purpose for our lives. Let's believe in that! Let His power reign in your life and give you the strength, confidence and a sound mind for what you may face. I will be right along with you as we take on this challenge. The challenge to not worry, but giving our anxieties over to God, believing He will come through for our success in the end and then we will be able to give Him the glory for sustaining us. Worry, fear, anxiety...cast it all on Him, because He cares for you. Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. - 1 Peter 5:7

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. -Isaiah 41:10

Be Blessed. Look Up. Pray. Believe. And Grow.

Sustainability.

The wind blows the treetops and rushes against the skin. It is unseen, yet felt. It stirs up the sea and tears away the rocks. It is unseen, yet is seen. I always wondered why some things on earth are invisible, yet felt or all we meet is the results of what we cannot see. Wind, in particular, is a mysterious phenomenon. Have you ever wondered why? Why is the wind invisible, yet felt and its effects on the earth are seen. Sometimes, I think I think way too deep into certain things. Maybe God has given me this as a gift, though. Wind is unseen. God is unseen. Wind's effects on the earth and on people (their lives and possessions) are seen and felt. God's effect on the earth and its people are seen and felt. John 8:3 “The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can't tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can't explain how people are born of the Spirit". I did a little research. In the Bible the Hebrew word, "spirit", is interpreted as "wind or breath". Something so simple, yet something we need. Wind is composed of air or oxygen. As living organisms we need this to sustain us. I don't think that wind is just something that happens. It is not something that is without purpose or meaning. I truly believe that wind is a reminder of God's sustaining truth, love and power that we cannot live without. Wind is a reminder to us that without air death will soon overcome us. So, is true for God and His Spirit that dwells on Earth. Without God death, depravity and misery will soon encamp us. Another property of wind is invisibility. We cannot tell which direction it will come next. We cannot see what it is composed of. We cannot understand its paths. Its paths are "just because". This, too, is similar to how God is. We do not know His plans. We do not know which direction He will take. We do not know all of what He is composed of. We trust the air. We trust that it will always be there. We trust in its sustaining force. So then, will we trust in God? Will we trust that He, too, will always be there? Will we trust that He will sustain us? I cannot make you or anyone else trust in Him. God cannot make you trust in Him. He has and will continue to offer opportunities for you to trust in Him. He will show you that He is trustworthy but will not force anything upon you. That decision, well it is up to us. It is a daily choice. We choose. We make that decision. So, what will you decide? What is holding you back from choosing to trust in Him? Why will you make that choice? Examine the pinch; that gut feeling inside you and take time to really think this through. It is a life or death situation. So, I urge you to choose wisely, every day.

 Ecclesiastes 11:5 "As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother's womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things".

Messy Lives.

Consider what it means to be His workmanship. Everything - your life circumstances, your personality, your talents, your strengths, your mess ups and your weaknesses - has contributed to who you are and who you have been chosen to be in Christ. Yes, we all have messed up and some worse than others. Remember though, sin is sin whether small or large according to God. Also, remember the good things such as giving a smile to a stranger, a gentleman holding a door for a lady or even a simple prayer for someone. Everything we go through, think and do is chipping away at our rough edges and restoring us to our true identity, God's Child, an heir to the One True King. Take time today to thank God for His workmanship in you! Ask Him to help you see how He has gifted you to bless the body of Christ and to bless those around you. Listen and observe. Ask Him to give you wisdom and understanding of His Word and Purpose. Follow Him as He leads you in the path of righteousness and patiently allow Him to lead. (This is a struggle for me since I enjoy being in control and hate giving up the reigns to Him). Consider what it means to be created in the likeness of God. Write down what comes to mind and meditate on it. May you be encouraged and be blessed!

The Same.

Sometimes it's hard for me to believe that God will always be the same because I've experienced so many changes in this world and in myself. When I'm in trouble or hard pressed or worried for some reason I find it difficult to truly believe that God is always going to be faithful to those who follow His Word and try their hardest to live a life worthy of the Gospel. I know I'm human and that this world tries to get me to think that God will change and that the change will not be for my good and that I cannot trust in Him always. But the Bible clearly states differently. God the Almighty will always be with me wherever I go, whether I accept His presence or not. He will also always be the same. I don't have to worry about things working out for the best because He said they would and He has proven that. I don't have to worry about the future because He said He had a plan that would prosper me and give me hope. Even writing this I am thinking of the things that I'm unsure about whether God will provide or work for the best. I ask God right now to help my heart and most importantly my mind to let go of what the devil and world have to say about who You are. I ask that I adopt His ways and the ways of the apostles knowing that God's faithfulness is true, is always good, is always available and will always stay the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. I ask for wisdom to understand the words that pour from the Bible, to understand their true meaning and what I should do with them. I pray that I will not lose heart and I will keep fighting the good fight and running the race to the finish line where I will stand before the Lord with nothing left to give because all that He had provided me both physically, mentally and spiritually had all been used up for His glory and to praise His Holy Name. I thank my God for His knowledge this morning and know that this verse was not a fluke chance happening, but an orchestrated divine intervention that the Holy Spirit prompted me to dig deeper into its meaning and to apply it to my life. I thank God for His love, gentle spirit and patience. Praise be to the One True God who WAS, IS, AND IS TO COME!
